Police Recover Vehicle that Plunged into Chesapeake Bay

Posted on Apr 13, 2011

Police have recovered the car of a Virginia Beach woman who was killed when her vehicle plunged off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) and into the Chesapeake Bay on March 15, 2011, according to a local news report.

Virginia Beach police said that Jean Calcagno was driving her 2007 Toyota Avalon south on the CBBT around 8:30 a.m. when it crashed through a guardrail and into the bay.

Calcagno's corpse was recovered on the same day as the accident, but her sports utility vehicle remained at the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay, in 30 feet of water, for several days.

The vehicle owner's insurance company contracted a dive company to fetch the car, according to a report on WAVY TV.
Divers dragged the vehicle back to the surface of the bay and put it on a barge.
