Several Virginia Car Accidents Left in the Wake of Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene tore through the east coast, hitting Virginia on Saturday, August 27, 2011 and continuing through the weekend. As the heavy rains and devastating winds bore down on the eastern and central portions of the Commonwealth, Virginia State Police were busy responding to several calls about Virginia motor vehicle accidents and disabled vehicles. Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. on August 27, the Virginia State Police responded to 237 calls for assistance in response to motor vehicle accidents and 152 calls for disabled vehicles. According to the Virginia State Police, most of the motor vehicle accidents included property damage.

During the hurricane, the Division 5 - Chesapeake area Virginia State Police responded to 65 motor vehicle crashes and 40 disabled vehicles. People were urged to stay off the roads throughout the Commonwealth. Driving conditions were especially dangerous in the Hampton Roads region due to the standing water on roadways and several downed trees.
