Smithfield man dies when Nissan truck strikes tree in Chesapeake

Posted on Sep 29, 2010

A man who died yesterday morning in a Chesapeake car wreck has been identified by police.  The victim, George West, 52, of Smithfield, was driving on Taylor Road in Chesapeake when the accident happened.

According to police West lost control of his 1995 Nissan while headed south on Taylor Road.  He crashed into a tree near the intersection of Taylor and Redfern Lane around 8:30am.  No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the wreck.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene of the crash West was pronounced dead.  He was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed into the tree, which may have contributed to his death.  Chesapeake police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Statistically, pickup truck drivers – especially males – are less likely than other motorists to wear seat belts when they drive.  The decision to not wear a seat belt can be a deadly one, as in wrecks like this when the vehicle strikes an immobile object the driver is more likely to be thrown from the car when they crash.

Any time a vehicle accident victim is thrown from a car or truck the likelihood that they’ll be seriously hurt or killed goes up dramatically compared to victims wearing a seat belt.
