A Suffolk man was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident after he led police on a chase along White Marsh Road. The man, Wesley Gardner Allen, 35, was driving a red Ford F-350 along East Washington Street.
A police officer spotted Allen and followed him, knowing that Allen was wanted by the Western Tidewater Regional Jail for escaping house arrest. Allen was under house arrest after pleading guilty in 2007 to conspiracy, forgery and uttering. When the officer tried to make a traffic stop, Allen did not stop and instead continued driving slowly.
Without warning, Allen accelerated significantly and headed off down White Marsh Road. The officer followed in the same direction, but without lights or sirens. According to the officer he came upon Allen’s vehicle in the 1800 block of White Marsh Road.
The officer believes that Allen lost control of his truck when he tried to drive along a curve in the road. When he lost control, he struck a tree. The incident is under investigation, which is the case for all police pursuits.
It is not known if Allen was wearing a seat belt when he crashed, if he was ejected from the vehicle upon impact, or if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
