Texting, Driving More Dangerous than DUI for Portsmouth, Hampton Drivers

Posted on Mar 29, 2011

A recent study by researchers at Virginia Tech indicates that texting while driving is more dangerous than driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, according to a report in the online edition of the Bloomington Pantagraph, a newspaper in downstate Illinois.

Research at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute shows that those who text while driving are "23 times more likely to get in a car accident than someone who is not."

Though the trend of texting started out with teenagers, the proliferation of Blackberrys and iPhones has made texting part of the normal business day for many adults in the Tidewater area and throughout the commonwealth of Virginia.

The author of the article in the Pantagraph raised questions to be mulled over by those Virginia drivers considering texting while behind the wheel. Is it really that crucial for the person you are texting to receive the message now? Can you wait a mere ten minutes to text? Can you pull over on the side of the road to send an urgent text? Do you have to read the texts that come in while you drive, or can you put off reading them until you have arrived safely at home?
