The Dangers of Distracted Driving in Virginia – What You Need to Know

A five-year study from the Department of Motor Vehicles revealed a 22 percent increase in the number of fatalities caused by distracted drivers in Virginia. Distractions on the road include texting, emailing, eating, loud radio, and excited children in the backseat - anything that diverts the driver's attention, even for a second. In fact, 20 percent of accidents in Virginia each year involve distracted drivers.

Virginia, along with 33 other states, has instituted a ban on texting while driving, and only nine other states, including Washington D.C., do not allow the use of any handheld devices when driving. However, according to Virginia police, the law regarding texting while driving is difficult to enforce, as a driver cannot be stopped for texting alone. When a driver is stopped, the fine for the first offense is $20 and then $50 for every subsequent violation.

Distracted driving is such a serious cause of concern in Virginia that, according to police, a driver's phone records are now obtained whenever a crash results in a fatality or serious injury.
