On Friday, August 12, 2011, Tashawna Harrison-Reddick, age 7, was crossing Lynnhaven Parkway near Ski Lodge Road at 9:15 p.m. with a group of children. The children stopped to allow a car to drive by, but Harrison-Reddick continued walking.
Harrison-Reddick, of the 700 block of 16th Street, was struck by a Honda Accord as she crossed the parkway. Sadly, she died at the hospital approximately one hour later as a result of her injuries. Charges are currently under review by the Commonwealth's attorney.
An earlier nearly fatal Virginia car accident occurred on February 9, 2011, when eleven-year-old Kamryn Johnson-McCall was crossing South Lynnhaven Parkway, only a couple of miles away from the recent August fatality.
Johnson-McCall was hit by a car driven by Mark Richard Tietjen, 36, when she was crossing the parkway and stopped to pick up her iPod that she had dropped. Johnson-McCall was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition, but she stabilized. Tietjen, who fled the scene, was caught by police and charged with a felony hit and run.
Drew Langford, the spokesperson from the Virginia Beach Public Works Department, indicated that the Traffic Engineering Department will inspect the lighting, speed and other factors involved in the recent fatal car crash in Virginia, as they had done previously for the car accident that occurred in February. According to authorities, both young girls were not using the crosswalks and neither of the drivers were speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol. Langford indicated that, after reviewing the unfortunate accident in February involving Kamryn Johnson-McCall, it was determined that no changes needed to be made at that time on Lynnhaven Parkway. However, the investigation into the car crash involving Tashawna Harrison-Reddick is still ongoing.
These motor vehicle accidents were unfortunate and tragic; we offer our deepest sympathies to the families and friends impacted by these events.
