Two vehicle wreck in Virginia Beach takes one driver’s life

Posted on Dec 22, 2010

A Virginia woman driving west on Edinburg Drive was killed when she was hit in an intersection by another vehicle.  Unfortunately, the crash proved fatal for her.

The woman, Joan Elizabeth Horen, 81, stopped her 2004 Toyota Camry at the intersection of Edinburg Drive and North Lynnhaven Road just before she was hit.  After stopping she entered the intersection, where she was struck on the side by a 2004 Hyundai Elantra heading south onto North Lynnhaven Road.

As a result of the crash Horen had to be transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to treat her severe internal injuries.  Upon arriving at the hospital she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Unfortunately, Horen died from her injuries.  There is no word as to the identity or condition of the Hyundai driver.  According to police, Horen was wearing her seatbelt when she was hit.

The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Fatal Crash Team is investigating the incident.  At this time, no charges have been filed.

Side-impact collisions like this – also known as “t-bone” accidents – can be very dangerous to both vehicle occupants.  These types of wrecks often happen when a driver fails to yield the right of way and collides with a vehicle that does have the right of way.
