A school crossing guard was hit by a car outside Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School, according to Virginia Beach police. The crossing guard was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who was standing in the intersection at the 4500 block of Princess Ann Road when she was hit.
A police spokesperson stated that the guard was hit as she was getting ready to stop traffic outside the school so that cars from the school parking lot could leave. The car that hit the guard came from a townhouse development across the street.
The driver who hit the guard, James Holloway, 87, pulled out of the development in his 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis and drove right into the guard. The force of the impact caused the guard over the top of the Mercury, and she fell down onto the road on the other side of it.
Police believe that Holloway should have seen the guard, as she was wearing brightly colored traffic direction gear, and the school zone lights were also flashing. Holloway has been charged with disregarding a crossing guard or police direction.
The crossing guard had to be taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to be treated for her injuries. The police spokesperson said the guard complained of severe body pain and she may have broken some bones. Her injuries are not expected to be life threatening.
