A driver accused of striking an 11 year old girl near the intersection of South Lynnhaven Parkway and Crimson Holly Lane in Virginia Beach has been found to have a history of traffic violations.
The traffic accident happened Wednesday afternoon when driver Mark Richard Tietjen, 36, struck the girl while driving a van. The girl was crossing the street with a group of friends, and had stopped to pick up a dropped iPod. The driver quickly left the scene of the accident, but was apprehended about 45 minutes later.
Virginia Beach police were able to find Tietjen after the hit and run crash thanks to witness descriptions of the vehicle. Once apprehended, Tietjen was charged with felony hit and run then taken to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. He was later also charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
The victim, whose parents have asked that her name not be released, had to be airlifted to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. She is in critical condition; no other details are known.
If found guilty of the charges against him, Tietjen could face up to 10 years in prison or a year in jail and a fine of as much as $2,500. He has a history of traffic violations, including several drunk driving convictions as well as speeding and driving on a suspended license.
