Mark Tietjen, a resident of Virginia Beach, pleaded guilty on May 25, 2011 to a hit-and-run accident for which he now faces ten years in prison. Tietjen allegedly hit an 11-year-old with his mini-van on February 9th and then proceeded to flee the scene.
The accident was deemed a felony by prosecutors, as Tietjen critically injured the little girl on Lynnhaven Parkway at the intersection of Crimson Holly Lane in Virginia Beach. His attorney claimed in open court that the defendant panicked and fled the scene, but that he wasn't drunk or on drugs at the time of the accident.
According to a local news report, the defendant has a record of run-ins with the law. Past charges include speeding, impaired driving, and driving with a suspended license.
The girl's family was not at the court hearing.
The defendant, formerly employed as an auto mechanic, wrote a letter to the judge expressing his sorrow over the accident.
Tietjen is still in the county jail, and faces time in the state penitentiary. He will return to court on August 17th for his sentencing hearing.
