Toyota, now infamous for the massive recalls for “unintended acceleration” that began last year, has voluntarily recalled 1.13 million Corolla and Matrix vehicles after the federal government announced that it was investigating cases of engine stalls in the 2005-08 model line. This recall brings the total number of Toyotas recalled worldwide to 11 million since last November.
The recall affects 2005-08 Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix vehicles sold in North America. The problem is that some Engine Control Modules (ECM) may have been manufactured incorrectly. Two-wheel drive vehicles with Toyota’s 1ZZ-FE engine may develop a crack at solder points or on the component that protects the engine’s circuits from excessive voltage.
If a crack does occur, the result can be engine failure. Drivers may see the check engine light come on (however, it may not be visible at all), the vehicle may shift harshly, the engine may not start, or the engine may stop working while the vehicle is being driven.
The recall may be involved in three accidents and one injury, although this has not yet been confirmed. Owners of these vehicles will be notified of the recall in mid-September. However, a replacement for the ECM unit is not yet available. When it is, Toyota dealers will replace the unit for free on recalled vehicles.
