Virginia Officer Hit Twice by Suspect During Chase in Newport News

Posted on Oct 04, 2011

A Virginia motor vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 64 in Newport News on Monday, September 12, 2011. According to Sergeant Michelle Anaya, at approximately 4:43 p.m. a police officer spotted a driver of a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling westbound in the HOV lane at Bland Boulevard. The officer attempted to pull the driver over for the HOV lane violation, but the driver refused to stop. When the trooper ran the license plate of the pickup truck, the vehicle came back as having been stolen from Henrico County, outside of Richmond.

A chase then ensued on the interstate with the suspect cutting through openings and changing direction prior to the Fort Eustis exit, where he started heading eastbound. According to Sergeant Anaya, the suspect first hit the trooper's vehicle at Bland Boulevard. He made another cut through to head westbound again, then one more time at Denbigh to head eastbound. The suspect then crashed into the same trooper again, at which time the suspect wrecked the truck in the crash and the pursuit ended.

Although he was hit twice, the trooper was not injured in the chase. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was transported to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
