On Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011, shortly after 10:00 AM, Trooper Lane Edward Farlow was parked and conducting speed enforcement on US Route 13 in Kiptopeke, Virginia, when Jose Evans crashed into his police cruiser. Evans, 49, of Winterville, NC, was traveling southbound with passenger Victoria Poynter, also of Winterville, NC. Evans was driving just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel at approximately 65 mph, when Evans’ 2003 Nissan Murano ran off the left side of the road and crashed into Farlow’s vehicle. At the time of the crash, Farlow was parked in the grass at the intersection of Latimer’s Bluff Road, facing eastbound. Evans struck the left front wheel of Farlow’s vehicle, and the Murano went halfway into the cruiser’s engine compartment.
According to state police spokesperson Sergeant Michelle Anaya, Farlow was sitting in the cruiser at the time of the crash, which went spinning and landed in a ditch after it was hit. Farlow was knocked unconscious, and an unidentified 33-year-old Maryland man called the state police dispatch from the cruiser’s radio. Virginia State Police and EMS responded to the call. Both Farlow and Evans were airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, while Poynter was taken to Eastern Shore Hospital.
Farlow suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital. Evans and Poynter also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, alcohol was not a factor in this near-fatal crash, but Evans has been charged with reckless driving.
